Today, modern traffic control systems are necessary to obtain maximum efficiency from the highway system. For the traffic controller to respond to the needs of traffic, it must be able to sense traffic conditions at all times with reasonable accuracy. This vehicledetection requirement has resulted in extensive research and development of vehicular-detection systems. Because of its performance reliability and low cost, one of the most commonly used types of vehicle detector is the induction loop detector.
